We have the great pleasure to announce you that our abstract RISK CONTROL @ LOWER COST (in cooperation with Gasunie) is officially selected by the IGRC 2011 Technical Programme Committee as one of the shortlisted candidates for the IGU Best Practice Award. The abstract reflects the application of our methodology on risk assessment (extended bowtie) and the way it supports the development of a long term maintenance- and renovation policy.
The winner of the Best Practice Award will be announced at the 25th World Gas Conference in June 2012, Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia).

PIMS International (in cooperation with ESA, Gasunie (NL) and SASOL Gas South Africa) have almost completed the PIMS in Space project. The objective of this study is to investigate the feasibility of monitoring gas and oil pipelines using space borne assets and sensors.
The recommendations and conclusions of the project have been be presented by Neo Modise (SASOL Gas South Africa) at the International Astronautical Congress (IAC) in Cape town. Major conclusions are: Technical issues have been solved, the technique developed can cover the majority of user requirements, The technique opens new perspectives for pipeline integrity management practice on both technical and economical basis. ESA, SASOL Gas South Africa and PIMS International have agreed in Cape Town to continue the project and are planning to execute a pilot program in 2012. A roadmap is under development. New participants will be invited on the basis of this roadmap.
PIMS International provides N.V. NUON Energy technical assistance in the execution of a risk assessment, meeting the Dutch NTA8000 requirements, for the 24" pipeline from Enschede (NL) to the gas storage plant in Epe (D).
The assessment will be carried out by making use of the Bowtie methodology as been developed by PIMS International. Next to it the software package of PIMS International will be used to execute TCO-calculations, calculate the Performance Indicators and present the effectivity of (proposed) mitigating measures on the Risk Matrix of N.V. NUON Energy. Execution is planned to be finished end of October 2011.
Starting January 2011 the new regulation NTA 8000 and BEVB (Dutch Act on Integrity Management of transmission Pipelines) is the standard to which pipeline owners in the Netherlands must comply.
PIMS International is active in informing stakeholders about the coming regulations. Together with NEN we have given training sessions to present the implications of the upcoming changes. The training on PIMS practice required to meet NTA 8000 requirements and the development of functional specification for an IT-PIMS system based on risk assessment with bowtie technology.
The next training session, lectured by PIMS International (Rob Bos), will be the 22nd of November 2011. End-users (Gasunie, The Netherlands, and SASOL Mozambique and South Africa) are involved throughout the project in the definition of the user requirements and testing of the system.
Our PIMS in Space project will be presented, by Neo Modise (SASOL South Africa), at the International Astronautical Congress (IAC). The IAC, organized by the International Astronautical Federation together with the International Academy of Astronautics and the International Institute of Space Law (IISL), is an annual meeting of the actors in the discipline of space and consists of plenary sessions, lectures and meetings. In addition there is a large exhibition running concurrently.
The 62nd International Astronautical Congress will be held in Cape Town, South Africa from 3 - 7 October 2011. The congress will be held in the latest jewel in the city's business crown, the spectacular Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC)

For our project PIMS in Space (a project funded by the ESA Integrated Applications Programme that focuses on monitoring gas and oil pipelines using space borne sensors), PIMS International will visit Gasunie, The Netherlands (one of the end users, together with SASOL Mozambique and South Africa) on April 4th. Both companies are involved throughout the project in the definition of the requirements and testing of the system.
Last Monday PIMS International has returned from their visit to SASOL Gas in Johannesburg. For our project PIMS In Space (in cooperation with ESA) PIMS International had visited SASOL Gas South Africa and Mozambique to define their requirements for this project.
The PIMS in Space workshop took place on January 18, 2011 with a feedback session on January 20, 2011. PIMS International and ESA gave a number of presentations:
- About the scope of the workshop.
- About the European Space Agency.
- About current operational scenario's, problems and needs.
- Examples of solutions that we can offer by integration of space assets and terrestrial solutions. Results of previous studies and progress since.
At the end of the day there was a discussion, in order to refine needs and added value, study focus. The main idea underlying the workshop program was:
- To discuss current needs for pipeline integrity management and to briefly discuss what space assets could contribute to the subject of pipeline integrity.
- People from SASOL were stimulated to present and discuss their scenarios.
- From the scenarios, the user needs and user requirements were identified and discussed with SASOL.
During the Wednesday (January 19, 2011), the team also presented an NTA-8000 workshop. During this workshop, pipeline integrity management is discussed from a Dutch point of view (as encoded in the directive NTA-8000). The report of the NTA-8000 workshop of SASOL Gas can be downloaded here. Note: the numbers in this document are fictitious.
PIMS International would like to thank SASOL Gas, and in particular Neo Modise, for their hospitality during the week and their valuable contribution to the workshop.
In the recent months we worked hard to develop the brand new website for PIMS International and its specializations. And with a stunning result: at January 17th, the website is a fact! The website is attractive, clear and a user friendly product with current information customized presented. On our site you will find a clear overview of our services and projects, information about PIMS International en her people and you will be kept regularly informed through news items!
Do you have a question? Please contact us. Our contact details can be found here.
We hope you enjoy visiting our new website!
PIMS International has acquired a project funded by the ESA Integrated Applications Programme that focusses on monitoring Gas and Oil pipelines using space borne sensors. End users (GasUnie, The Netherlands, and SASOL Mozambique and South Africa) are involved throughout the project in the definition of the requirements and testing of the system. To define the requirements PIMS International will visit Sasol South Africa this week.
